Installing wood floors is an excellent way to add a classic, chic touch to your home. With so many grain patterns, colors, and sizes to choose from, it’s easy to find a hardwood that matches your style. Even though there are so many different options available, it can be difficult to determine which is right for your house. Whether you’re remodeling or building new, understanding the different types of hardwood is the best way to figure out which materials can withstand your lifestyle and look great for years.
If you’re looking for a unique stain that fits your finishes and paint colors, unfinished hardwood floors may be the right choice. These hardwood planks are cut and packaged without any stain or sealant added. After installing them, you have the option to choose a custom stain. Unfinished floors are perfect for kitchens because the finishing stain and sealant you apply will seep between each board, preventing water from penetrating your hardwood.
Sometimes it’s easier to choose a hardwood that’s already stained and ready to go. Prefinished hardwood floors are manufactured with a stain and sealant already applied. You simply have to select the color that you want, place the order, and install as directed. Once your hardwood is laid, there’s no need to apply additional product to the surface, like stain or sealers.
Just as the name suggests, solid hardwood floors are crafted entirely out of hardwood. They are typically 5/8 to ¾ inches thick, giving you the option to refinish the surface many times. When treated and sealed properly, they are fairly resilient to stains and water spots. However, solid hardwood floors aren’t a great option for humid climates, as they tend to warp and form spaces between slats.
A more resilient option, engineered hardwood consists of a thin layer of real wood that’s adhered to several layers of plywood. This gives the flooring panels the look of real wood, but adds an additional layer of stability and durability. Because it’s not susceptible to warping, it’s an excellent choice for any area in your home, including bathrooms, kitchens, and below-grade basements.
